Crawl Low at the Beep!
You will need:
Music and a smoke detector (or something that simulates the sound of a detector).
How to play:
Have the children march to the music in a circle or zigzag around the
room. As soon as the smoke detector beeps, have everyone in the room
get on their hands and knees and crawl low to the exit. Be
sure there is a caretaker at the exit. Do this several times so the
children can practice the correct response to a smoke detector alarm
from more than one place in the room. Remind the children that
"crawl low" is to be used only when they are in a room with
smoke.
crawl low under smoke!
You will need:
A 6' rope and 18" strips of black, blue and purple crepe paper.
How to practice:
Have the children help you tie the crepe paper strips onto the rope so
the strips hang down in streamers about a foot long. Use this as
"pretend" smoke for the children to practice crawling low under
smoke to an exit. Remind the children to hold their heads up
above the floor (about 18" from the floor) and always look where they
are going. Be sure there is a caretaker at the exit to supervise the
children and to praise them for reaching the outside.
